As we gather, we recognize that we live, work, pray, and play
in the unceded traditional lands
of the Cowichan Tribes and Coast Salish People.
We continue to commit ourselves
to the work of reconciliation and relationship-building
with our First Nations neighbours.

Call to Worship:

Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord.

O Come. Let Us Worship.

Gathering

Christ became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name.

Philippians 2.8-9

Collect of the Day

Holy and immortal God,
as we enter into this holy week
turn our hearts to Jerusalem,
so that, united with Christ and all the faithful,
we may enter the city not made with hands,
your promised realm of justice and peace,
eternal from age to age. Amen.

The Proclamation of the Gospel:

 Matthew 27. 11-54

Sermon:  The Ven.  Brian Evans

May the words of my mouth and the meditations of
our hearts be ever acceptable to you, O Lord.  Amen.

'Christ as King, Christ as Servant'

A short comment:

Today, we entered the church waving palms, and laying cloaks on the aisle of the church; praising God and singing, "Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest!"

We came proclaiming Christ as King.

And, as the Liturgy unfolded, and we read the Passion of our Lord, we came to the place where Christ was not King, but, where Christ was crucified.

Christ was accused of being a deceptor.
Christ was accused of something he did not proclaim.

Yet, Christ did more.

Christ showed the world that he came, not to be served, but to serve.

And so, today, we celebrate Christ:
Christ who, on the one hand is King, in the sense that He is our Saviour.

And Christ was crucified and will rise again, illustrates for us in his sacrifice on the cross, that he came to be our servant, to serve so that others may be saved, and for this, we rejoice and offer our thanksgiving.  Amen.

Thanks be to God.  Amen.

Let Us Pray

Sustained by God’s abundant mercy,
let us pray for the Church, the world, and all of creation.

Save your church, O God.
Enable us to boldly confess in every time,
and place, that Jesus Christ is Lord.
With the humility of a servant,
equip congregations, synods, and other ministry settings
to proclaim
your extravagant love for all.

Merciful God,
Receive our prayer.

Save your creation, O God.
Every living being you have made has purpose.
Give us renewed appreciation of farm animals who labour in the fields,
service animals who accompany their human companions,
and beloved pets who live alongside us.

Merciful God,
Receive our prayer.

Save the peoples of the earth, O God.
Restore dignity to those who are scorned and persecuted
for their religious beliefs or political activism,
and deliver them from the hand of their enemies.
Bring peace to places where conflict runs deep.

Merciful God,
Receive our prayer.

Save those who cry to you in any need, O God.
Watch over all who are incarcerated, or awaiting trial,
and stand with those who are unjustly accused.
Be present with those feeling isolated, lonely,
or fearful.

We continue to pray for those in need, particularly in our parish:
Roy & Gail; Daryl & Sue; Roy; Maureen; Jay; Sheila;
Joseph; and those on our hearts.

Merciful God,
Receive our prayer.

Save us in your love, O God.
Guide the work of our Rev. Brian;
our music leader, Ginette; our Deacon Trish;
our readers; and all who
assist in our worship.
Sustain them in their leadership during Holy Week.

Merciful God,
Receive our prayer.

Save us at the last, O God.
We give you thanks for your saints of old
who embodied your servant love.
As you came to their aid, so deliver us in times of trial,
that every knee would bend in praise to
you.

Merciful God,
Receive our prayer.

We lift our prayers to you, O God,
trusting in your steadfast love, and your promise
to renew your whole creation;
through Jesus Christ, our Saviour.     Amen.

As our Saviour taught us:
Our Father,
who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive
those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us fom evil.

For thine is the kingdom,
and the power and the glory,
forever and ever.  Amen.

As we walk this week, we pray God,
that our experience of your journey,
in this week that we call Holy Week,
will strengthen our faith.

And, as we witness your grand entry into Jerusalem, and your walk to Golgotha, the place of the skull; and we experience your death, that we may be prepared to rise with you in jubilation on Easter Sunday.

May we all experience your salvation,
in your name, we give thanks. Amen.

And so, we walk this week with Jesus.
We we walk, in triumph, as a Christian people,
we walk in faith.

The Blessing
The Peace of God, that passes all understanding,
keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge
and love of God, and of his son, Jesus Christ our Lord:
And the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
be with you and remain with you always.  Amen.
