The Ten Commandments: “GPS” or “GNS”?

Many of us are absolutely committed to our GPS (or our Garmin) for directions when driving.  A friend is so committed to his that it is always on, even for a trip to the grocery store!

Our commitment to those electronic systems can be overwhelming. Dare we name it "obsession?”

I recently read some statistics about peoples’ willingness to ask for directions. (It is like the manual that came with your new barbecue: “Oh, was there a manual in the box?”)

Guilty as charged, men fail regularly in the field of asking for help, directions, or reading manuals. Some of us will only switch to the navigation screens when we actually believe we do not know where we are going!

On her recent road trip, Flo and her friend found themselves to be searching for their hotel. It appeared they were not going to arrive at their destination, even with the assistance of GPS technology!

They discovered two issues:

  • Issue 1: they were using 2 different GPS systems--a cell phone, and the vehicle’s navigation system—neither of which was always updated.

  • Issue 2: the hotel booking provided the incorrect address.

Their solution was to stop, phone, and get the proper address.

Why do I share this?

We all can lose our direction in life.

As Christians, we have access to one of the greatest “GPS” systems (advice) ever received: The Ten Commandments.

We are well aware of what happens when we are left to our own advice. The Book of Exodus gives us the history of how the Ten Commandments were given and their message to the people.

When I teach confirmation classes, one of my favourite lessons is about The Ten Commandments. I share, as an emphasis, how the Commandments are not so much about law as they are about a way for life. If we follow these guidelines in life, we will not lose our direction.

When I researched “GPS,” I made two surprising discoveries.

  1. The GPS technology (Global Positioning System) is owned by the Government of the United States.

  2. I discovered this acronym: GNSS (global navigation satellite systems).

Now, I share with you my acronym for the Ten Commandments: GNS (God’s Navigation System) for life.

Blessings to all on Thanksgiving Weekend. It is always exciting to see our church decorated with our symbols of thanksgiving, beginning with GNS for life.
