Visio Divina
Sacred Seeing
St. John's Illuminated Bible

Visio Divina, sacred seeing, is an ancient form of prayer.

It combines reflection on scripture with meditation on images to open our heart to the indwelling Spirit of God.  The images we will focus on are taken from the St. John’s Bible -- the first completely handwritten and illuminated Bible produced since the invention of the printing press!

The St. John’s Illuminated Bible was commissioned in 1998 by the Benedictines of Collegeville, Minnesota as a millennium project.  It is a significant artistic and spiritual creation which  merges ancient traditions of manuscript creation and contemporary artistic expression.

The project was led by the renowned Welsh calligrapher, Donald Jackson, who served as royal scribe to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
